How to read this explorer

The hierarchy follows the UN Classification of the Functions of Government (COFOG). Open any major function to see practical subcategories—for example hospitals and outpatient care within health, or old-age, unemployment, family, and disability support within social protection.

Expenditure by function comes from Eurostat's general government expenditure by function dataset. Revenue, total expenditure, and the government balance are checked against Eurostat's main national accounts dataset.

“General government” is broader than Spain's national administration: it consolidates central, regional and local government plus social security funds. Transfers between those levels are consolidated where required by the ESA 2010 framework.

Amounts are nominal and reported in millions of euros. The reporting period is the calendar year. The latest 2024 values are provisional and may be revised by Eurostat. Last checked: 2026-10-07.
